About us

Magasool (meaning ‘Yield’ in Tamil) is a not for profit initiative to improve the lives of small and marginal farmers in Tamil Nadu. Magasool mainly focuses on providing specialized agriculture inputs to small and marginal farmers that would either improve their agricultural yield or decrease their input cost. The services offered are first tested in an experimental farm and then taken to a few farmers as a pilot. Once there is significant impact demonstrated over conventional methods, the service is taken to a large number of small and marginal farmers.

In 2014, Magasool reached more than a 1000 farmers and landless labourers through programs in Modified System of Rice Intensification, vermicomposting and kitchen gardening. We currently work in 6 districts Cuddalore, Kanchipuram, Salem, Thanjavur, Thiruvannamalai and Trichy.

The Team

Jayaram Venkatesan – Founder and Director, Magasool
Jayaram Venkatesan did his Masters in Electrical Engineering in the US and worked as Vice President of Countrywide Research Division in Los Angeles, California. His work mainly focused around understanding social issues and supporting many non governmental organizations in India. His deep interest in social work brought him back to India in 2007 and was involved in various research and field programs related to Education and Agriculture until 2010. In 2010, Jayaram started field experiments in agriculture to compare improved techniques over conventional methods and that evolved into the Magasool program.

Ajay Kumar Tannirkulam – Founder and Director, Magasool
Ajay Kumar Tannirkulam did his PhD in Astronomy & Astrophysics from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He returned to India in 2008 and joined the Analytics unit at the Center for MicroFinance – Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR) as head. He was also the Interim Executive Director of the center between 2011 and 2013. His deep interest in agriculture and livelihoods of small and marginal farmers made him spend time in the field to understand issues faced by farmers. Along with Jayaram, Ajay co-founded the Magasool in 2012 and has been working full time on developing quality programs for small and marginal farmers.

Apart from this Magasool has six district coordinators and one mechanic as full time employees.
